Thailand Want Thaksin Shinawatra
Metro-reality.com, PHNOM PENH: Cambodia has received a request for the extradition of former Thai Prime Minister of Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra. Thaksin arrived in Cambodia on Tuesday (10/11) to work as an economic adviser to the government there.
The three diplomats Thailand had submitted a letter request for extradition to the State Department officials Cambodia.
Analysts said Cambodia is likely to deny the request. If that happens, there will be increased tension diplomatic relations between the two countries.
A BBC correspondent in Bangkok reported on Wednesday (11/11) said that Mr. Thaksin’s presence in Cambodia could cause irritation and concern for the ruling Thai government today.
In his country, Thaksin in absentia was sentenced to two years in prison in an alleged corruption case full of interest.
Provision of office for Mr Thaksin by Cambodia is regarded as an insult by Thailand.
Political demands
possible rejection of Cambodia at the request based on the views of the charges against Mr. Thaksin in Thailand is considered as a political intrigue. “The penalty caused by the actions Thaksin coup in September 2006, when he was elected by the people of Thailand to win a majority in a democratic election sebuh,” said Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong.
In Bangkok, Thailand’s foreign ministry said the wait for official confirmation from the embassy in Phnom Penh of Cambodia such rejection. “If true, we will consider the next steps we can take,” said deputy representative Thani foreign ministry told AFP Thongpakdi.
Prime Minister of Thailand Abhisit Vejjajiva has said that his country could halt cooperation if the extradition to Cambodia Phnom Penh refused to send Thaksin back to Thailand to face trial.
